Mercury

The following are scientific facts prepared by the International Association of Oral Medicine and Toxicology ( www.iaomt.org  ). A more complete discussion with scientific references can be found at http://www.toxicteeth.org/Fact%20Sheet2006.pdf

  • Mercury is the 2nd most toxic substance in the world.

  • At least 17 studies have shown that mercury fillings constantly leak vapor.

  • Even the American Dental Association admits that they leak at least 1-3 micrograms per day.

  • 80% of the mercury vapor that we inhale from mercury fillings enters our bloodstream.

  • 2/3 of Americans' exposure to mercury come from mercury fillings. Only 1/3 comes from fish and vaccine preservatives. In other words, American get twice as much mercury from fillings than from fish and other sources.

  • Mercury is transferred from a mother to her fetus during pregnancy and is transferred post-natally through breastmilk.

  • Many studies have established that mercury vapor from fillings can lead to health problems.

  • Mercury promotes the formation of antibiotic resistant bacteria

  • Mercury can be detected in the air of dental offices

  • Mercury harms the health of dentists and dental personnel.

  • The National Academy of Sciences estimated that 60,000 newborns a year are at risk for learning disabilities because of the mercury in mothers.
In September 2006, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) admitted that they were unable to prove the safety of mercury fillings.

  • Mercury fillings are banned in Japan, Norway, and Sweden. They are not allowed in women and children in Austria and Germany. They will be banned in California. There has been proposed legislation in the U.S. Congress to have them banned or highly restricted in the U.S.
